Materials

Nylon: Lightweight, water-resistant, and durable nylon is our most popular custom flag material. It’s perfect for flying in light breezes and can stand up to months of outdoor exposure.

Polyester: Standard polyester is available in a dye sublimated print. This crisp print is ideal for photo images and intricate logos. 2-Ply Polyester is available in red, white and blue and is a heavier material (comparable to our U.S. Polyester) making it ideal for high-wind areas, such as coastal regions. 2-Ply Polyester can be appliqued (sewn) and can withstand harsh elements.

Other materials are also available for dye sublimated flags, which are almost always made for indoor settings and ornamental purposes. Most police academies use dacron for their class flags (commonly called guidons), while flags for film productions may be made on a low-glare fabric such as spun poly or heavy knit.

Single/Reverse vs. Double-Sided

Single/Reverse flags show a correct image on the front and a 90% bleed-thru, mirrored image on the back. This is our most recommended option for outdoor flags, not only because it is the most cost-effective, but also due to their light weight, allowing flags to fly in a light breeze.

Double-Sided flags require two single flags sewn back to back, with a liner in between. These are not typically recommended for outdoor flying due to their heavy weight. As such, double-sided flags are typically reserved for indoor, ceremonial, and parade settings.

Double-Inserted seals are available with specific design elements, and can provide a double-sided logo on a single flag.

Finishings

We offer several options for finishing your flag based on where it will be displayed.

Outdoor Flags: These are typically finished with a heading and brass grommets for standard flagpoles. Larger flags (8×12' or bigger) use rope hems and thimbles or D-rings. Flags for outrigger flagpoles may need non-tangle patches to prevent flipping in the wind.

Indoor Flags: These typically use a pole hem and tabs (leather or Velcro) for attachment. Indoor flags may also have fringe, typically in gold for added decoration. Other fringe colors are available. Ask your rep for a complete list of colors.

Printing Techniques

Digital Print: This is the most affordable and versatile option. We use an 8-color printing system for rich colors that may last up to 12-18 months. Digital Print allows for a full color print at no additional cost.
Applique: Here, designs are cut from colored nylon and sewn onto a base flag of nylon or polyester. This is a handmade option that’s great for high-wind areas, and it’s commonly used for boats. Applique is highly recommended for simple designs and text.

Dye Sub w/ Heading & D-Rings

Dye Sublimation: This method works well for detailed indoor flags, such as those used by police academies and the military. It’s best for ceremonial purposes due to the crisp design quality.
Embroidery: This is a premium option used only for indoor or parade flags. We use traditional methods, (thread & needle sewn) which are perfect for clients who want a classic, vintage look. These flags are not available in Single/Reverse. They can be either Double-Sided or finished with a backliner.

Shapes & Sizes

We offer a variety of standard shapes and sizes, and we can even customize them for you:

  • Rectangular: The most common shape, available in both horizontal and vertical options.
  • Pennants: Popular for schools, stadiums, and boats.
  • Guidons: Mostly used by the military and law enforcement.
  • Swallowtails/Burgees: Common in nautical settings or for country clubs.

HEAR WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT US

Really happy with my experience with Gates Flag & Banner. There was a slight relocation problem that was handled quickly and expertly. If I had room for another flag pole I would get one from this company.

Understanding the Bunker Hill Flag

The Bunker Hill Flag, also known as the Blue Ensign of New England, is thought to have been flown by continental forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill, on June 17, 1775. However, historians disagree about whether or not this flag actually featured in the Battle of Bunker Hill. And if the flag was used, there is also disagreement about what it looked like.

The History of the Washington Cruisers flag

When we unfurl a flag here at Gates Flag & Banner, we know we’re doing more than raising fabric and thread—we’re raising stories. And few flags carry a story as bold, defiant, and distinctly American as the Washington Cruisers flag. With its simple yet powerful design—white background, a green pine tree, and the words “An Appeal to Heaven”—this banner is one of our favorites to share, especially with those who believe that flags are more than decoration; they’re declarations.
